DeafBlind Community of Texas Presents:
Immersion into a deafblind life
Experience a simulation environment to step into the shoes of a DeafBlind individual.
OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
Cost: $600 Per Person - 2.4* CEUs BEI Ethics Pending
(Payment Options Available)
Date: Sept 5th to 7th
Location: Austin
DeafBlind-led Activities:
Engage with a Co-navigator to explore the local supermarket with a list of items determined by the group. Then, work together in a fully-stocked kitchen to prep, cook, and serve a meal.
Venture to a local restaurant and, with the support of a CN, order, eat, and pay for your meal with the group.
Attend a DeafBlind social event while under simulation. Challenge yourself to communicate with other guests and attendees.
Learn orientation and mobility techniques. Gain experience with co-navigators, mapping, and the classic white cane.
Goals:
Improve your understanding of working with DeafBlind individuals. Simulate different levels of sight and hearing while learning how to navigate in typical environments with support.
What to bring:
In addition to a weekender of clothes and toiletries, we recommend you bring a swimsuit and towel for possible underwater PT time, which will discourage a dependence on visual information. If you have them, wearing noise-cancelling over-ear headphones as well as earplugs will better simulate a Deaf experience.
CEUs:
DBCTX is offering 2.4 CEUs (BEI Ethics, pending) for certified interpreters who participate.
